IT for Competitive Advantage
Successful use of information systems within a business enterprise is often an elusive goal. However, an understanding and appreciation for the use of information technology to manage an enterprise is very important. The competitive role of information systems, which contributes to overall success of the business through an effective integration of business strategies, information technology and people is a major focus on today's business environment. This module explores how information systems impact organizations and conversely, how organizations can take control of Information Technology to gain a competitive edge. It further examines how managers can strategically use Information Technology to capture and deliver knowledge more efficiently and to rapidly create a competitive advantage.
Electronic Commerce
Electronic commerce describes the ways in which business activities take place over networks. It is a process of marketing, evaluating, procuring, selling, buying and also producing goods, services and information. E-business and e-commerce have already a significant impact on many people and organizations, and one may only expect that the impact will be growing. This module is intended to supply students with an overview of the electronic commerce phenomenon currently sweeping through the global economy. The module introduces contemporary management philosophies as they have come to be used for the marketing, selling, and distribution of goods and services through the Internet, World-Wide-Web, and other electronic media.
Telecommunications Management
Upon successful completion of the module, the student should be able to:
- Develop an understanding of the fundamental concepts of telecommunications, data communications and networking;
- Familiarize with network technologies, protocols and standards;
- Explore the managerial considerations surrounding telecommunications and networking applications design, procurement and deployment;
- Address issues related to the impact of telecommunications and networking technologies on the globalization of business activity and electronic commerce;
- Analyze the effects of telecommunications on business;
- Familiarize with key technologies;
- Acquire skills on the management of telecommunications;
- Integrate telecommunications to strategic business plans;
- Identify, evaluate, select and manage service providers.
Knowledge Management
On successful completion of the module, the student will able to:
- Appreciate the value of corporate knowledge management.
- Appreciate how Organizations use information to construct meaning, create knowledge, and make decisions.
- Gain an understanding of the forces driving KM emergence, basic KM terminology, trends, authors, theories, practices, technologies, and, the experts who developed them.
- Perform a corporate KM culture print and provide consultation to yield significant improvement.
- Articulate how KM initiatives might be started and the role(s) of knowledge workers in such initiatives.
- Understand the application of specific technologies in the KM environment including e-learning technologies.
- Contribute to the development of learning organizations.
- Develop an awareness of intellectual assets and techniques to measure them.
- Learn the evolution of Knowledge Enabled Customer Relationship Management (KCRM)
- Understand aspects of organizational change management
